DIY How to improve the user-friendliness of a covered litter box

Pixie :

Further to my repeated exploits, Claire chose to put back the lid on our litter boxes. The advantage of a covered box, it is because when I shake my legs, I throw no more sand (or of poo) everywhere on walls and on ground. The inconveniences are the following ones : the smell stays inside, the air circulates less well and thus the sand dries less faster, you do not see what takes place in the surroundings, and if you do not think of keeping the head outside, you risk to bang against the top of the lid. I still have no this problem, but Zorro who is tall can confirm it.

To limit these inconveniences, Claire asked Momo to drill openings on the top of the lid, all the tour : the smell can evaporate, the air circulates and helps the sand to dry, and we see outside. Cunning, isn’t it ?

I, Frimousse, always do “what I have to do” in the garden. Rain, snow, sunshine, whatever the weather. The litter box is only for emergencies… When the cat flap is locked and I urgently need to ease myself.
For my friend RouXy it is the same – even if I suppose he uses the soil of the ceillar where he spends his nights, if necessary.
As far as Tigri was concerned, he would always unse the “indoor toilets” – there are two, in two different locations. Tigri wanted protection – under furniture, under tables, and under the cover of the litter box. When he was very ill, during the last days he was with us, he even spent his nights in the litter box, under the cover.
“Poor Tigri,” he sighs, my Master…

This is a great idea! Another commenter on my litter box blog post from last week actually had a fan that circulated the air too.

That is a great idea and if someone insists on a covered box, they should do that. I don’t like to use port-a-potties so I figure my cats wouldn’t like covered boxes.

We don’t have covers for our boxes. Probably for the best since Rushy boy weighed in at 17.6 pounds at his last doctor’s visit. Do they even make covered boxes in Rushton’s size?

We have the biggest covered boxes we found in our area, and it’s OK but not more for Zorro ; we don’t think that Rushton would fit in it ! It’s another DIY to make a box for him ! Purrs

That was such an excellent idea. Maybe you can invent your own prototype, market it and make millions of green papers or whatever color papers your money is. XO, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

Very good work having the humans do this. We had all sorts of pans, Lidded. No Lids. Corner pans. All types and never really was good until Dad made ours out of the really big cargo containers. We have two openings so never feel cornered. There are high sides and a lid so nothing escapes (We have some who aim very high, right Toby) And if Dad forgets to scoop we can make it. They each hold over a container of litter so it is nice and deep for the diggers (Rumpy) Hard to please 7 cats. MOL

We don’t have a covered kitty litter. Sounds great for privacy though. Kali is a big girl so would probably knock the top out of place and I cover and cover and then cover some more so the top would probably be helter skelter. What a clever idea to put holes in the top for circulation! It would stink in there without circulation. Excellent.
