How to protect your sowing from gardening cats ?

This post is also available in : French German Italian

potager 3Two weeks ago, Claire began the kitchen garden. She sowed radish and salad; she knows that cats adore scratching freshly turned ground, and thanks to the active collaboration of our Angel Loupi, she developed several strategies to protect her sowing :

  • Build a frame and cover it with wire-mesh for hens to make a cage to place on the sowing.
  • Use a mini-greenhouse from the store (also for the sowing inside).
  • Place a sowing veil and fix it solidly to the ground with big stones or small pickets.
  • Place crossed sticks (supports of bamboo for example) on the zone of the sowing.

And you, what are your human’s tricks to prevent us from gardening ?

  1. Summer

My humans trick is to not garden at all! Which is a good thing for the plants that don’t get to come live here because she would surely kill them with her black, black thumb.

  2. Hannah and Lucy

Mum has paved our garden as she hates gardening but she bought some big blue pots and put some summer plants in them – they don’t need watering as ever since she planted them it hasn’t stopped raining!

  3. Colehaus Cats

Our trick of using a flat piece of chicken wire (with all edges turned under – a must!) for our spring bulbs against the squirrels works very well, though we tend to prefer the mini greenhouse look with a row of wire loops and remay fabric over the crops.

What a huge garden! Wow! MomFOD is making one at the new house, but there are rats. We are dealing with RATS! I shall roll in the garden, though, and she will let me, for sur.e – Crepes.

  6. LP

We don’t go outside so no garden rolls for us! 🙁 But LP has a beautiful flower and plant garden. What does Claire plant?

    1. The Swiss Cats

We have flowery bushes like roses, spireas, weigelias or lilac and others ; in the kitchen garden, Claire plants carrots, tomatoes, zucchinis, salads, radish, French beans, green peas, and aromatic herbs. And there is an area with raspberries. Purrs

My mom has to protect our garden too. She uses chicken wire or nylon bird mesh to cover the dirt and that prevents the cats from using it as a litter box. I hope your garden does well. We’ve already had broccoli and lettuce. Next is strawberries and blueberries. We hope to have lots of tomatoes, sweet peppers, and potatoes. Mom has no luck with carrots….maybe next year!
