Routine visit at the veterinarian

ZORRO :
Of what does it remind you ? Of an ambush ?
embuscade
That was exactly it !

Our PTU are available permanently, but yesterday, they had changed place. We naively followed treats up to the bottom, and Claire treacherously closed the door behind us ! I was not even able to tell her that I needed to do a wee !

inondationAfter 3 minutes of car, I mewed all the same to tell it to her. I mewed even one or two times to protest against the trip by car. 10 minutes later, we had arrived in front of the veterinary office, but it was too late : hardly taken out of the vehicle, I roared ” I don’t hold any more ! ” and I flooded the attractive pillow of my PTU. Fortunately, Claire was on time, and the veterinarian also : he posed me on the table, Christelle, his adorable assistant, put my pillow in a plastic bag, she took paper towels, she wiped my PTU, and the veterinarian wiped my paws and tummy. After this entertaining interlude, the medical examination really began : I came first, and Pixie later.

What is a routine visit at the veterinarian ? For us who are young healthy cats, the (annual) visit consists of the following points :

  • Weighing
  • Control of the ears
  • Control of the eyes
  • Control of the mouth and the teeth
  • Control of the coat (to see if we have fleas)
  • Listening of the heartbeat with a stethoscope
  • Vaccines
  • Vermifuge (because we go out and go hunting from time to time)

Claire also asked the veterinarian to trim our claws, but he disadvised her from doing it. He explained that it was indicated for indoor cats who don’t use enough their claws or for old cats who could have embodied claws, but not for us. We have scratching posts inside, we have tree trunks outside, we don’t normally need a pawticure. The fact of cutting regularly the claws of cats can modify in the long run the way the claw grows. She can become more thick, and annoying for the animal.

Result of our visit: I weigh 5,5 kg (12.1 lb) and Pixie 3,2 kg (7 lb), and we are in excellent health.

Back to home, Claire wiped my paws and my tummy with a wet wash glove and put at once my pillow to be washed. She gave me a big cuddle, I played with Pixie, and the “wee-wee » incident was fast forgotten.

And you, how do your visits at the veterinarian take place ?

Sounds like quite an adventure! Your carrier pillows are super cute. Don’t worry Zorro, you aren’t the only kitty that has wee wee accidents on the way to the vet!

  2. Summer

That sounded like an unwanted adventure! I need my claws clipped before my shows, always, so I don’t accidentally hurt a judge (or in the case of more fractious kitties, on purpose!). Binga and Boodie don’t need theirs done anywhere near as often, which is a good thing, since Binga hates it. Boodie has the sharpest claws of any of us, but she is also almost as easy to clip as me!

I take care of claw manicures for Russell and Alice, but Scooter always gets a pass. She has the humans here scared to even try. She uses the cat scratchers to take care of herself. I think she thinks we are not qualified.

As we spend a lot of time outside fence climbing and walking plus we have 3 scratching poles and lots of fencing we are lucky enough to never have our claws clipped by the vet – we think they are very happy about this too as they still have their fingers when we get put back in our PTUs. We did squirm a lot though when we needed to be stabbed as it was our annual review.

So happy you both had a good visit with your vet. Our annual visit is always conducted at home with all eight of us getting everything done then. If we are sick and have to go to the vet, it is about a 30-minute trip, which we all hate. Weeing in your PTU is always excused. If you got to go, you got to go! Calista Jo is thinking she might need to diet as she outweighs you by two pounds, Zorro. She sends you a kiss for your sweet nose. I have never ever heard of this problem with trimming cats claws.. and I worked at a vet’s office for a couple of years. I have always trimmed my own cats claws on a regular basis because they become very sharp and pointy and the cats can get them caught in the bedding… I also don’t want to risk them over growing and becoming embedded. My cats have lots of different scratchers and different types of scratchers, and sometimes one of their claws won’t shed the outer layers and become thicker, but when I clip them the old layers shatter right off and cleaning up the claws is easy.

As they get older the claws don’t shed the outer layers as easily and can become thicker on their own. It can also be a sign of disease. If a cat has thick and brittle nails you should check the thyroid and do other blood tests

Mum usually does it herself from time to time, when she sees that our claws are too long or too sharp. The vet told us that if the cat get caught with his claws, or doesn’t use them enough because of age or lack of activity, claws should be trimmed. Otherwise, it was better to let the cat do it himself ;). We never heard of the growing problem before ; we think it could happen if people do not trim the claws in the right way. Mum already told us that she would regularly check our paws anyway, and trim our claws if needed *sigh*… Purrs

I am glad your vet visit went well for both of you. I never had my claws clipped until I became ill. Walking in the fields and climbing trees kept them trimmed back. When I was ill I didn’t go out at all and spent all my time sleeping so my claws grew long and sharp. My mum clipped them for the first time when I was 14 years old. I sat on the bed beside her and let her do it without any arguing. She says I am a very good boy.

Yes we know there is something afoot when the Dad brings all our carriers up. Last visit our friend Joanne came in the morning and we were all in the PTU’s by 8am and at Dr Stabby by 830. I got the whole family to sing the song of our people on the way and Dad and Jo found this a real laugh but we did not.
Yes they love us and that’s why they take us but… Maybe house calls would be better MOL

I think I must try the peeing thing next time!! 😉 Glad everything was ok. I have had my claws trimmed only a couple of times in 8 years. It’s true when we have lots of things to scratch it keeps them down!

Having to go in the PTU is OK in an emergency like that. If Claire didn’t listen that you needed to come back out and take care of it, that’s what happens. We’re glad it sounded like a good visit to the vet otherwise.

That is usually the once over I get at Dr M’s too. Checked over good and sent home with a good report. They also check poops for parasites. I don’t go outside so not likely to have them. Mum trims my back claws (my firsted peoples took the front ones out!), but not often.

Glad everything went well- except for the pillow. I just realized I haven’t been getting your blog in my email since I unsubscribed from the other languages- sorry I missed some.

Heh heh. The wee wee incident is now out on the interwebs and will never be forgotten. Bwaahaha! That’s what Dr. D said about cutting my claws except we didn’t dnow about what claw cutting can do. She just told the peeps not to worry cos only old cats have trouble with their claws growing into their pads.

Congratulations on your healthy kitty check-ups. Mom always puts towels in the bottom of my carrier just in case I pee, but I’ve never done that even though it takes 30 minutes to get to the vet. I go to the vet at least once a year. I’m generally very healthy and the visit is easy.

  17. LP

Peeing is always forgiven Zorro! We are glad both you and Pixie checked out o.k. at the vet’s. Our Mama trims our nails regularly because we don’t go outside. We are all very good about it although Esme grumbles a lot during the procedure 🙂

Glad everyone is in good health! We haven’t heard that about nail trimming before… we get ours clipped every few weeks. Now mom is thinking that might not be such a good idea! Thanks for sharing this info!
P.S. For some reason we haven’t been getting email updates from you blog. We’ve been subscribed for quite some time and usually always get email notifications of new posts, but we haven’t gotten any in a while. We thought you all might be taking a break or something… but this post proves that’s not true! We will resubscribe and hope that fixes the problem. We just wanted you to know that we haven’t been ignoring you — we just didn’t realize that you had new posts up!

We had some issues with Worpress sending (or not !) emails ; we switched to MailChimp, and everything seems to go well. The best is : you can chose in which language you get your email ! Purrs
