How to make a cat shelter for winter ?

This post is also available in : French German Italian

We have beautiful sunny days, but for approximately two weeks, it’s clearly cooler in the morning : between 3 and 6℃ at 7 am (37-42℉). The heating is not on all the time, because it’s still 18 to 20℃ (64-68℉) out during the day. We have no fireplace, then sometimes it’s a little cold and damp in the house.

Our humans took out jackets and socks, and blankets did their appearance on the sofa again for watching TV in the evening. Zorro sleeps outside during the day, and this coolness doesn’t disturb him, but I decided to sleep under the spread to have a cosy and comfy spot !

Autumn has just begun, but these lower temperatures reminds us our friends who will soon have to spend the winter outside. The video of Cole et Marmalade shows you here how to make easily a cat shelter :

And you, how do you do to settle down softly in mid-season ?

it’s a great idea to help out our friends who have no home …
I hope my mom will buy me a new blanket for cold days… the old one has big holes… wonder how that could happen :o)

We had a new boiler in a few weeks ago and it was so cold here this morning Mum had to reprogramme it as it wouldn’t come on, the fitter said to re-programme the lowest temperature as she was stood shivering in her bare feet she wasn’t at her happiest!!

our rescue does lots of TNR and makes sure that shelters are available. we have a couple in our garage for Allie and her friends.

for us – mom will pull out the fuzzy blanket to put over her legs when it gets cooler and that is our favorite thing.

My Mom makes me a “tent” with an afghan draped over some furniture so I can get under it and nap! Also we have two outside enclosures – one with a heater – for all visiting neighborhood kitties who need a place to sleep on a cold night.

    Love, Sammy

Good post. That time of year is upon us when we worry about those without homes. We still have our little outside visitor but she never liked the houses we put out and she may have a home she visits. I do hope so as I feel it will be a cold winter

When it gets colder I nap on the bed more because the afternoon sun shines on it. Sometimes when I go into the barn with my mum, I can smell that intruder cats have been there, and sometimes I see flattened bedding where they have been sleeping.

That’s a very easy way to ensure feral cats have somewhere to get out of the cold! Thanks for sharing the video. We don’t have any stray cats in our neighbourhood but we know there are many cats who don’t have homes in other parts of our city. Our Mama has started to put fleece blankets in our beds in preparation for the cold weather but so far we have been having a sunny and mild Autumn. 🙂

I love this time of year- sweaters and blankets 🙂 You are smart to stay under the covers. That is a great idea for cat shelters. I don’t have any strays near me – I took them all in over the years 🙂

Last week it was over 100 during the day but the past couple of days have been cloudy, rainy and cool. I think fall might finally be here. Last week, mom was in shorts, this week long pants, socks and a sweatshirt. We always have kitty blankets and beds out but she has also plugged in my heated window shelf! I just love it. We have people in the neighborhood who take care of our feral kitties but I still watch out for them.
