For more than a week, we have scorching temperatures. It is horribly warm and wet, our humans cannot sleep, and we all work in slow motion.
How to protect your cat during a heat emergency ?

How to protect your cat during a heat emergency ?

Here is a brief reminder :

  • Make sure that he has access to a cool, ventilated, and shaded place.
  • Make sure that he drinks enough. Put some cool water at disposal in several places.
  • If needed, refresh him by petting him with a wet towel, or make him play with some water if he likes it.
  • Your cat will reduce his usual activity instinctively, it’s normal.

If your cat pants, sticks out the tongue, or seems apathetic, he is maybe a victim of a heatstroke : read here how to react quickly and effectively !

I worry the most about The ‘O’ Cats, but they sleep under the huge hosta plant leaves, on the shaded ground. I make sure they always have fresh water too. Angel and Chuck have fans to loll by, and The Hubby drops ice cubes in their drinking water. Good post!

Great facts. I also say to wet the cat’s paw pads because that’s where we sweat. Gramma used to bring Autumn over on real hot days when she’d start panting. Another thing is to put the cat in a cat tub. The tile is cool but you can also fill with a tiny bit of cold water. You can put ice cube in their water too.

  5. When the Cat is Away

The best thing about staying in Finland this year (as we often travel to Germany for a longer period in summer) is that it’s highly unlikely that we’ll suffer from heat! That being said, Mom’s normally suffering more than we felines.

So many places have been experiencing high heat. It’s so important to provide your animals with a place to be cool (or out of the sun) and fresh cool water. Local news reported the remains of several dogs were brought to the shelter for disposal because they died from exposure to heat. It’s very sad.

This is such an important reminder! Cupcake got overheated today and the head peep tried to remember everything she could about cooling off a cat. It’s great to be reminded of how to keep kitties safe as the temperature climbs.

Excellent hints! Having lived where the temperature was/is over 40c for extended periods of time, I found ice cubes in the the water dishes was a wonderful solution. Kozmo, Jo Jo, Nellie and the Hairy Slobbery sisters lived to play with them and they kept the water cool.
Hpe the heat and humidity break soon!
    Love barb
