The higher, the better : vertical space and cats

This post is also available in : French German Italian

Hello ! Here am I ! Can you see me ? Above, on the left, in the tree !

We, cats, occupy all the space available on our territory, and it includes the vertical space.

Indoor cats must have the opportunity to climb and to reach high positions : a chair, a top of cupboard, the kitchen counter, an edge of window, a cat tree, shelves fixed to the wall just for us, no matter. The access to a high position allows us to observe our environment, to see unnoticed, to feel safe, to have a roundabout way to avoid meeting another cat, and satisfying our natural need to climb.

I am lucky enough to have a catified indoor, and outside, a garden with trees on which I climb, I play, and I hunt : could it be better than that ?

I wish I could climb on trees like my feline friends ;o)… or the cat of our neighbor who even got 5 minutes of fame while the firefighter plucked it from our walnut tree ;o)

WOW look at YOU!! You a “tree dweller!!” Cody often is a “tree dweller” because he likes being up high on his cat tree, but sometimes he is in “bush dweller” mode too!

Holy cat, Pixie! Seeing you up there would make me nervous. How did you manage that?!?! Then again, because of where we live, my cats can’t go outside … but I’d love for them to be able to experience the outdoors like you can. We have one cat tree and I’m working on how to give them more vertical space.

At first I thought you were photoshopped up there cos that branch doesn’t look too sturdy. I used to climb to the top of the door. I bet I’d climb the tree with you.

    Dear Ms Pixel,
Oh WoW! You are very high up! I have never had the opportunity to climb a tree! Kozmo tells me that they are so much fun! And that there is a huge tree in Daddy’s backyard that he LOVES to climb.
You are so very brave. i am not sure I would climb up there!
Some day I hope that I too get to climb a tree!

It must be so much fun to climb a tree. When I was a street cat it was in a city so I didn’t have trees to climb. Lexy was on the street in the suburbs, but she doesn’t tell me much about those days. You are so brave to climb up there!

Oh Pixie, good job getting up there. Most of us love to get up in trees and on roofs. Those are such great pictures of you up there. I bet it was great fun. You all have a great day.

YooHoo…Pixie….it looks like you’re floating 😀 I loved to climb too…just little trees, but every tree is better than no tree, right 😉 Unfortunately I can’t climb anymore, so no more nesting in the trees nor fences 🙂 Pawkisses for a Happy Day 🙂 <3
