How much costs a cat ?

It’s useful to know it BEFORE adopting a cat, right ?

All the indicated amounts concern Switzerland, where life is rather expensive. If you don’t live in Switzerland, read first this example of household budget : it will allow you to put in perspective amounts given in this article.

Cat price

  • given or found : 0 CHF
  • shelter : 150 to 250 CHF
  • breed : 1000 to 2000 CHF

Identification microchip

  • pose and recording at AMICUS : 80 CHF

In our opinion, it’s essential !

Veterinarian

  • neuter (male): 80 to 100 CHF
  • spay (female): 170 to 200 CHF
  • vaccines = > 1x a year : 60 to 90 CHF
  • worm treatment = > 4x a year: 40 CHF
  • flea treatment => 4x a year if needed, or if your cat goes out : 50 CHF a year

The vaccinations expenses are higher first year for a kitten, because a reminder has to be done 3 weeks after the first vaccination.

Don’t forget that your cat can get ill or have an accident as our poor Angel Loupi : it represents additional veterinary expenses which can be important.

Insurance

  • 120 CHF per year

A hospitalization or an operation is expensive ; an insurance is very useful to face these spending.

Food

  • bowls = > at least 2 for food and 1 for water : 12 CHF
  • food : 50 to 150 CHF a month

For the long-term health of your cat, avoid low-end food from the supermarket ! We teach you here how to read labels to better choose your cat’s meals. You can also choose to prepare him his meals yourself or to give him  raw food, but then watch out the nutriments balance !

Toilet

  • litter box : 10 to 40 CHF
  • shovel : 2 to 5 CHF
  • litter : 10 to 20 CHF a month

Zorro is super economic : he does everything in the garden !

Basic accessories

  • transport box : from 25 CHF
  • cat tree: from 50 CHF (80 cms in 1m) or from 100 CHF (1m20 and more)
  • brushes and combs : 5 to 40 CHF
  • claws scissors : 5 CHF
  • diverse toys = > according to needs and renewal : variable
  • basket : from 20 CHF

According to your lifestyle, you may need maybe also a necklace, a harness, a leash, a pension, a cat-sitter, a passport, …

In summary, how much costs a cat ?

The first year, besides the price of the cat himself, it’s necessary to plan an additional budget from 400 to 700 CHF for the microchip, spay/neuter, the first vaccines, and the acquisition of basic accessories.

A healthy cat costs then between 120 and 250 CHF a month, all included.

Please, don’t adopt a cat if you can’t afford the basic expenses it involves !

Why does your cat cough ?

Last Friday, in the evening, Claire heard me coughing : that didn’t last for a long time, just a coughing fit. As I didn’t seem to feel sick, she kept an eye on me (…and forgot to turn the iPhone for filming me…).

The weekend took place normally : I played with Zorro, he pursued me, I pursued it, I ate well, I came to cuddle, I mewed to say that I wanted to play with Claire or Momo, in brief, as usual. Except that I had a small coughing fit 5 or 6 times a day.

As that didn’t pass, Momo went on Monday morning with me to the vet. He said that I was very quiet in the car : it’s true, I did not even sing ! I’ve been brave : the veterinarian auscultated me, put his thermometer where the sun never shines, and to finish gave me a cortisone shot, without I protest. My humans have to give him news about me on Monday.

Why does your cat cough ?

He choked :

A foreign object blocks the trachea, and the cat coughs to expel it. The cough is strong, dry, and repeated. Watch out, according to the swallowed object, the damages in the trachea or in the larynx can be considerable !

He caught a mild virus :

That’s right, it happens ! But a mild virus can evolve in graver affection if it’s not looked after.

He has asthma :

An allergic sensibility can start an acute reaction. Asthma can also be chronic. The treatment with corticosteroids can be undergone in the long term.

He has a bronchitis :

The cough is frequent, strong and deep. The bronchitis requires an antibiotic treatment.

He has a pneumonia :

The cat is apathetic, often feverish, and his breath aches. The cough is weak and rare. Even treated, a pneumonia often leaves respiratory aftereffects for life. A veterinary treatment is necessary urgently.

He has a broncho-pneumonia :

The symptoms combine those of the bronchitis and the pneumonia. Cardiac, hepatic and renal complications are to be planned if left untreated. Even treated, a broncho-pneumonia leaves respiratory and cardiac aftereffects.

He has a pleurisy (breach of lungs enveloppe) :

The cat is apathetic, the breath is short and painful, and the cough very weak. A veterinary treatment is necessary urgently.

He has coryza :

The cat is apathetic, feverish, and doesn’t eat. He has runny eyes and runny nose, he sneezes or sometimes coughs. This disease is mortal : antibiotics relieve, but the cure of the cat depends a lot of his age and his immune system (adults have a better prognosis). Vaccination is the best protection against this disease.

He has parasites (aelurostrongylus) :

A snail or a slug eats the larvas of the parasite, a bird eats the infested snail, the cat eats the bird, and the parasite settles down in the lungs of the cat. The cough is dry. Medicine allows to eliminate worms.

Pixie recovering from coughing
In every case, cough is a warning, and the cat must be examined by a veterinarian ; the weaker it is, the deeper the breach is, and the higher the risk of aftereffects is.

4 good reasons for taking your cat to the veterinarian

Cats are pets as popular as dogs, nevertheless we benefit from much fewer veterinary care than them. Why ?

  • Because we have the reputation to be self-sufficient in many domains.
  • Because we are the world champions to hide our signs of disease and our wounds.
  • Because indoor cats risk nothing.
  • Because it is difficult to let us go into our PTU.

Those are myths ! Your cat deserves to remain healthy as much as you do : prevention is better than cure.
Take your cat to the vet

4 good reasons for bringing your cat to the veterinarian

(we cannot believe that we have just written this title…)

To carry out a general health control

The veterinarian is going to examine your cat from the nose to the tail. He will check :
– the weight: thinness, obesity, variation with regard to the previous visit, …
– the eyes : flow, state of the retina, reflex of the pupil, …
– the ears : wax excess, mites, …
– the teeth : tartar, gums inflammation, abscess, …
– the skin : alopecia, cyst, state of the fur, abscess, parasite’s presence, …
A health problem detected in an early stage is easier (and cheaper !) to heal.

To renew vaccines

Most of the vaccines must be renewed every year to keep their efficiency.

To verify the functioning of the microchip

It is very rare, but it may happen that the identification chip has a failure, or it may happen that it moves.

To cure your cat

It is rather obvious…

How often should you take your cat to the vet ?

Without specific problem, one or two annual visits are recommended. We go there only once : you would not get too much of good things, isn’t it…

Do you go regularly to the veterinarian ?
