We’ve been very busy by the preparations for Christmas this weekend. Our tree is now up and decorated !
Claire is born with cats in the house, then let’s tell you that she knows all the tricks to bring a Christmas tree and cats together.
The fir tree
- Choose rather a medium-sized artificial tree. Indeed, the real fir trees have a much more attractive smell, their needles can be toxic, and the water of the bowl also.
- Assure that your fir tree has a stable and solid base.
- Place it on a table if it’s quite small, or in a clear space. It would be necessary to avoid that a too close piece of furniture can serve as springboard.
- The perfectionists will still fix their fir tree to the wall or to the ceiling to prevent it from falling over ; Claire prefers to leave the principle which the fir tree CAN fall over without damage for it or for the cats. You can also place your fir tree in a room which you can close during the night. Our fir tree, for example, is 80 cm high and is put on a stool.
The decorations
- Use plastic or cloth unbreakable decorations, and which do not contain small parts which can get loose.
- Avoid : garlands, ribbons, and “angel-hair” (risk of breathlessness or intestinal obstruction in case of ingestion), artificial snow (toxin), chocolates (toxin), and real candles.
- Fix firmly the decorations to the fir tree.
- Don’t let hang the cord of fairy lights ; connect the lights in presence of an adult in the room, otherwise disconnect them and roll up the thread around the trunk. Protect your cords if your cat tends to chew on electric cords.
- Be double watchful if your cat is a kitten !
As Claire didn’t find what she wanted, she made herself the small cloth hearts.
Et moi, j’ai vérifié que les décorations étaient solidement fixées.
Tiens, on dirait que cette boule est de travers…
Oooooh ! Un cadeau ! Vous croyez qu’il est pour moi ?
That is a pretty tree. Pixie really seems to like it 😉 MOL!
Good safety advice too.

My Masters have found a solution: a genuine Christmas tree – a fir-tree or a spruce.
They prick!
What a cute tree. Pixie seems to really like your decorations! We have very few ornaments on our tree that are breakable. Over time, we have slowly eliminated the fragile ones. It’s just not worth worrying about them.
What a pretty Christmas tree.
Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx
Those are some good tips. The mom put up our big tree over the weekend, though there’s no ornaments on it yet. She likes to let us get used to having a tree in the house first.
Your tree is very pretty!
We get a real tree and I’ve never had an issue before even though it’s usually put right next to my cat tree. Great advice for those with more inquisitive cats.
That is a pretty tree! And yes Pixie, that gift is for you 🙂
the critters in the cottage xo
Lovely tree and great tips!

Your tree is very pretty.
pixie & zorro….awesum…thoz hearts Clarie maded R reel lee kewl…….awesum job by her…yur tree lookz grate ♥♥♥
Mum’s big problem with our tree in the past is that I have been known to open all the presents, looking for mine. I’ve also been known to leave my own presents (eg a dead mouse) under the tree with everyone else’s.
We don’t have the presents stacked under our tree this year. I don’t know why.
Great advice! I was worried about Mudpie and my tree but she’s been a little angel!
Pixie you look so cute helping to decorate the tree. Great tips on trees for cats.
Those are very good Christmas tree tips. And Pixie, you are adorable playing with the ornaments.
great ideas! we like your tree and the toys…er…we mean ornaments on it 🙂 we have a small fake tree so if it falls over, it isn’t far. still, with the crazy kittens here, we might not have it out this year.
pip, smidgen, minnie, hollie
That looks like fun. None of us Funny Farmers have ever seen a Christmas tree. Jan says there isn’t room for one. Marcus offered to let her take down his crate for the season but Jan said NO WAY!
What a sweet tree, we can tell you are having fun with it, huh Pixie?
We have a nice big artificial tree. It will come out on Dec 15th. TBT says, “old family habit”.
Great safety tips. Thank you! We’re lucky, because none of our cats are “climbers.” They also leave the ornaments alone, but we are still careful to only us unbreakable ones on the bottom branches of our (artificial) tree. 🙂
Your tree is beautiful!
Those hearts are adorable! Our mom keeps promising she will put up a tree next year. And then next year comes and she promises next year. *sigh* One of these years we’ll bring down a tree!
How gorgeous! We especially love the hearts!! xx
Great advice and we love your homemade ornaments!
Great tips. Love the cloth hearts!

I’m a tree-re-decorater too… maybe I have some feline genes? that would explain why I love seafood :o)
These are great tips! I must confess I don’t have a Christmas tree – with Mister Cat being such a curious playful kitty, I’ve decided to have a minimalist Christmas decor without a tree.
What a great tree!
have a super holiday season…

Your Christmas tree is beutiful !
Our mom-person say´s there will be no tree this year , because Conrad is a “little” menace 🙂
XOXO
Pixie and Zorro what a beautiful tree Claire has made for you and the decorations are adorable!! Bravo! the kitties and pups here have never cared for the tree..they never bother it or attack it..i think because all the empty boxes this time of year are too much more fun 🙂 but i was always super careful when i had foster kittens as a tree was like a kitty magnet! hoping you all are enjoying preparing for Santa paws loves Fozziemum xxx
The bigger the fake tree, the safer we are. The bigger the fake tree, the more safe battable decorations can be allowed in our reach!
and that is why I decorate my tree with cat toys
What an absolutely beautiful tree. I LOVE those heart ornaments!!! Don’t suppose they contain any nip though, huh?
Purrs,
Seville
LOVE your tree! The heart ornaments are adorable!
Love your tree and all the decorations! Good to see someone is testing them already 😉
We always had a real Christmas tree when we only had one cat, but then with kittens we opted for a fake one and it looks very real ! Anyway with all the decoration I don’t see the difference and the cats are not interested at all !
Lovely tree. I place all my vintage glass ornaments in a big glass bowl out of reach of paws :-0
Pixie, look! You found a gift hanging on the tree! We’re sure it’s for you. yes, we are.
That’s a great post…
