5 tips to help your cat to stand the absence of a close relation

Last Sunday, Momo left to have a coffee and he didn’t come back. We looked for him, we called him, but we didn’t find him. We waited for him outside until late hour, and he wasn’t still there. Claire explained us that he had had an accident, and that he would not come back home before several weeks.

The sudden absence of a close relation is very disturbing for us ; here are some ideas to help us to stand it :

  • Speak to your cat ; explain him what takes place.
  • Express your feelings : we know perfectly the way you feel, and we are even more disturbed if you try to hide it.
  • As possible, and if circumstances allow it, modify the least possible our usual routine : it will secure us.
  • Do not forget us : we need cuddles and we need to play with you.
  • Do not forget yourself : eat correctly, sleep as good as possible, and take care of you. We need you !

How to recognize a frightened cat

PIXIE : I was very afraid during the renovation work of the bathroom, especially when the worker drilled the wall, and you could see it :

  • My pupils were dilated
  • My tail was stuck under my body
  • My whiskers were against my cheeks

Pixie, afraid, is hidden behind a bag.
Other signs are added to these when a cat is afraid:

  • Ears are flattened towards the back
  • The body is often of profile with regard to the danger or to the aggressor
  • The cat growls or hisses

If you see a cat who is afraid, leave him alone : a terrified cat will feel threatened by the slightest movement, even comforting. He could then show himself aggressive and attack. Go away and leave him time to calm down alone ; if it’s possible, eliminate the source of his dismay quickly and calmly.
You will know that his fear passed when he will resume his normal activities : eat, go to his litter box, or ask for your attention.

My sweet little sister is a killer !

Pixie62ZORRO :

Do not trust appearances : this adorable kitten of 3 and a half months is formidable. Look at what she brought to Claire other evening :

Claire was a little sorry for this poor sparrow, but at the same time I know that she was proud of Pixie ! From her part, Pixie was overexcited, and had a lot of fun before realizing that her toy was… irreparably damaged. She moreover apologized publicly :

Dear bird,
I apologize. I’m only 3 1/2 months old, and I didn’t know that you wouldn’t fly any more having played with me. You were a great playmate for a while, though. Pixie

We can forgive her this time, right ?
