What to do if you witness abuse to an animal ?

In Switzerland, the animal protection law regulates the conditions of detention and the way of taking care of animals, the forbidden practices, the conditions of breeding, the conditions of transport, the coverage and the care to provide, the conditions of experiments on animals and conditions of killing and slaughter. It applies to all vertebrates, and to the other animals under certain conditions.

This law stipulates in the article 4 that
« 1- Every person who takes care of animals owes : a) to take into account at best their needs ; b) to watch their well-being as far as the purpose of their use allows it ;
2- Nobody should in a inequitable way cause pains to animals, troubles or damage, put them in a state of anxiety or strike a blow at their dignity in a different way. It is forbidden to mistreat animals, to neglect them or to overwork them pointlessly.
3- The federal Council forbids the other practices on animals which strike a blow at their dignity.”

So, what to do if you witness abuse to an animal ?
what do I see ?

  • If possible, take photos or make a video.
  • Note carefully the place, the date, and the hour of your observation.
  • Indicate the case to the Animal Protection Society of your area or to the cantonal veterinarian in writing if possible. Mention your name, your address, and your phone number. Be factual and describe exactly the facts the witness of which you were without forgetting the following information : what species ? how many animals ? what place (house, pasture, stable, …)? who is the owner (if known) ? are there other witnesses ? If yes, names and addresses of these.

All which can look like an abuse or a carelessness doesn’t establish necessarily a breach of the animal protection legislation. According to cantons, the APS or the cantonal veterinarian will control to estimate the situation and verify that the noticed abuse is really a breach of the legislation.

Have you already witnessed abuse to an animal ? If yes, what did you do ?

BlogtheChange Today, we need you. This article is specially written for our friends of Bex, at about ten kilometers from our home.

In the evening of Friday, October 10th, criminals voluntarily set fire to the main building of the kennel of Bex (source : Police Vaudoise and newspaper Le Matin). Fortunately, horses, cats, and dogs were able to be evacuated in time by the fire brigades which quickly arrived on the scene, and there is no wounded person. Only one dog was not able to be saved and died suffocated : already very shy, he most probably hid and was not able to be found in time.

The building is ravaged ; a container was already supplied to the staff of the kennel to install a provisional reception there. The shelters of animals and the reserves of food were not affected ; the kennel has an accommodation facilities of 80 dogs and 40 cats, but fortunately the cat boarding (which was in the building which burned) was luckily empty these days.

Winter is coming and our friends need, by order of priority :

  • Money : what remains of the building must be unsettled and freed to be able to reconstruct everything, before the arrival of winter if possible
  • Blankets

It’s August 1st !

Miau ! Miaou ! Miao ! It’s our National Day today !

drapeau suisseThe history of Switzerland is a little complicated : it is made by battles, by alliances, by invasions, by resistance, by religious wars, and by opportunism. It is little as troubles between tomcats in fact.

The holiday of August 1st commemorates the founding act of Swiss Confederation, the Pact of 1291. It was celebrated the first time in 1891, and the date of August 1st was chosen because this famous pact was signed at the beginning of August, but without we know the exact date.

Switzerland has a peculiarity (among others !) which always amazes : we mew in several languages on this small territory ! We mew in French (22 %), in German (66 %), in Italian (8 %), or in Romansh (0,6 %) ! And a part of cats stemming from the immigration mew even in another language (3.4 %). Most of us speak more than one language.

Then no, in Switzerland, we do not speak “Swiss”: the official languages of Switzerland are German, French, and Italian.

Miau ! Miaou ! Miao ! It’s our National Day today !
